The scale of the disaster unfolding in Nepal is devastating. More than 900 people have died, and thousands remain unaccounted for after catastrophic flooding tore through communities along Nepal’s Himalayan river valleys. More than 90,000 people are estimated to have been affected, and thousands of families now urgently need shelter and relief.
For those who survived, the devastation is difficult to comprehend. Families have lost loved ones. Homes and belongings have been swept away. Livelihoods have disappeared. And many survivors are now staying in temporary shelters, uncertain about what comes next.
ShelterBox is in Nepal. Our team has arrived in the country and is working with local partners to understand the most urgent shelter needs and determine how to reach families who have lost their homes.
Reaching them will be one of our greatest challenges. Roads and bridges have been destroyed. Power, water, and telecommunications networks have been damaged. Some of the hardest-hit mountain communities remain extremely difficult to access. In disaster response, the last mile is often the hardest.
Having emergency aid available is only part of the solution. We have to get the right aid to the right families, in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable.
That’s why ShelterBox is coordinating with local partners, government, and humanitarian organizations, as well as corporate partners offering resources and logistical support. Together, we are assessing what families need most and working to bring emergency shelter and essential supplies into the hardest-hit areas.

Depending on what families need, our responses can include emergency tents and shelter materials, tools, blankets, solar lights, water filters and other essential items that help families survive and begin the long process of recovery.
We’ve stood alongside communities in Nepal before, including after the devastating 2015 earthquake. Today, we are there again.
